Student learns a new song by first focusing on the melody.  She plays it by eye, then tries to play melody by ear.  After learning melody, she focuses on understanding the pattern of the harmony.  After student has a firm understanding of melody and harmony, she is asked to play hands together, using her eye to coordinate her fingers.
